From Lyon to the Dordogne

We had two days in Lyon, there was lots to see and do. We went up to Ste Foy, saw our house, which brought back great memories. We walked through Ste Foy, got breakfast, and took the bus back down to Bellcour. We spent the afernoon at Parc Tete d'Or -
saw the animals and layed in the sun next to the lake. After some shopping we took the Funicular up to Fourviere. That was a scary experience - we started up the mountain, and the tram jerked then started falling backwards, everyone was yelling, but it stopped. They wouldn't let us off (unfortunatley) but they worked on it for a while, then started it up again. We were thankful to make it to the top! We had dinner (salad Lyonaise) in vieux Lyon.
Sunday we caught an early train to Toulouse where we had a couple hour layover. Then up to Gourdon where we were picked up for our painting holiday. We a nice afternoon and evening, that included a great dinner with the family and another couple who are here to paint. We have a cute place that we are staying, and it's nice to be out in the quite countryside, a nice change from the city.
This morning we were served breakfast, then headed to Domme to pick out the place that we will be painting. It was so much fun going back to Domme after 10 years. We saw the house that we stayed in for a week, hasn't changed much. >
The town seems to have become more touristy, but it was still quaint and very very gorgeous. We then got to site see a little, we went to le Roque Gageac. We got home and were served Foie Gras for lunch - it was very good.
We have the afternoon free, so we are going to go swimming in the pool.

Lyon

We are settled into our second hotel here in Lyon. We were so thanful, the first one we stayed at was about as close to the train station as p[ossible. It was a nice hotel though, and we were thankful to have a nice place to relax. We switched hotels this afteroon, now we're just a couple blocks from Bellcour. Lyon is as good as I remembeed. It's so much slower and relaxed than Paris, but the buildings are just as pretty. I am so thankful to be here, and loving every minute. We ate dinner at Pizza Pino last night, which was fun. The weather is HOT, so we are going to head over to Parc de Tete d'Or.

Au revoir

I wrote this yesterday on the train:
Last night Kirby and Laura left for Germany. Kate, Monique and I decided to celbrate our last night. On our way out our landlord (who doesn't speak a word of English) asked if we what time we were going to leave, she said we needed to be out by 11:00 because somebody was going to come later that afternoon and she had to clean it. We said we had school and asked if we could leave our bags there while we were at school, then pick them up at 1:30. She agreed, and we were happy we didn't have to haul them with us. We went out for a nice dinner at a sushi restaurant. We took our time walking home (with gelato of course!) When we entered the courtyard, Kirby and Laura were back. They not only missed their train, but Kirby was pickpocketed - her credit card was in there and 300 euros in cash - so sad!. So we had another evening together wich was nice for us, but sad for them. They left extra early this morning to make sure they made it.
Monique and I cleaned and put our bags in the corner, so that she would be able to clean, then we headed off to school, Kate was going to stay till 11, then head out till 1:30. Unfortunatley, our class got out late, then eveyone asked to take pictures, then we had to wash the dishes (we take turns washing everyone's tea/coffee cups). So we didn't get out till 1:20. We ran the whole way home and were about 5 minutes late. We walked in the courtyard and the landlady was standing there, she said you're late. I said, yeah, I'm sorry, 5 minutes. She said, no... I was supposed to clean at 11. What happened was that she didn't have an extra key to get in to clean. I thought she would have told us, since I said we would be at school, or Kate would have let her in, since she would be there till 11. She was not very happy, I felt really bad. But she gave us back our deposit, so that made things better on our side.
We headed out with Kate (and our couple hundred pounds of luggage), it was a huge ordeal walking through the metro stations. But we were thankful our bags held together up and down the flights of stairs. I was surprised that nobody asked to help us carry our bags. Through all our metro changes and stairs only one girl asked if she could help (I gladly accepted). Poor Monique, she has two bags (one full of shoes, and her other one is breaking apart, but she did great!) But at the same time I don't know if I would have felt comfortable with sketching guys helping out. We found Kate's hotel, and got stayed with her for a little while. Monique and I wanted to make the 17:00 train to Lyon, so we headed back across town. While in the States we bought a 6 day train pass to use within a month. Today was our first time to use it, so we had to get it validated. We arrived at Gare de Lyon and started looking for a ticket window that could validate our ticket. Everything was closed down, we looked everywhere and couldn't find anybody to ask - there were only security guards with big machine guns standing around. Monique asked an older gentelman for help. He was very nice, I learned a new word from him - grave (not sure if that's how you spell it) means strike. I guess that's an important word to know in France. So he pointed us in the right direction. We're sitting on the train (without our ticket validated) but I am hoping that the ticket collecter will understand!
I am really excited to get to Lyon! We are starting a list of places we want to see.

Last Day Together

Monday night we went out for dinner in the Latin Quarter, we all tried escargot! We really enjoyed the Fete de la Music - there were some great bands. There were tons of musicians, and all of Paris came out to listen.
Yesterday Monique and I stopped by the market again as they were closing up and got some melons and cherries for a good price. Kate and Laura headed off to school. We spent the afternoon with Kirby. We walked back to the Jardin de Luxembourg, and sat out and talked for awhile. It was a gorgeous day! We then walked over to Musee Rodin. We weren't able to spend long there, since they were closing early. But we did a quick walk through and like it. Unfortunately we weren't able to see the gardens. We got back just in time for Kate and Laura to get back. We made mozzarella/tomato sandwiches with sauteed onions and garlic for dinner. At about 8, we walked to the Eiffel Tower. The first time we went up, we only climbed to the 2nd floor - we wanted to save the top for a clear day. We were really fortunate that our last night together was clear, so it was perfect. It was such a beautiful night, we were able to get up to the top by about 10:30, so by then everything was lit up. We walked back to the Champs Elysees, got ice cream, then took the metro home.
Kirby and Laura are leaving tonight on the train, so Kate, Monique and I are going out for our last night. We are starting to pack up - 1 month has gone too fast!

Fete de la Musique

Today, Monday the 21st of June, is the annual music festival around France. Musicians come out onto the street and perform. Two girls from school (Harmony and Natlaie), and Monique and I had lunch together at our place, then walked around listening to music. Not too much is happening yet, but a lot of bands are setting up. We are planning on going out later to listen more - it's a fun atmosphere.
Friday night after dinner we went up to Sacre Coeur on Montmarte.
It was gorgeous, the church was lit up, we set on the steps and had wine and looked out over the city. Saturday morning we got up early and headed out to the flea markets (with better luck than last weekend). It was almost overwhelming, so many people and so many clothes. I was the only one who bought anything - got a pair of leather boots. Sunday we went to Notre Dame for church. We were planning on going to an American Church, but a couple of the girls thought we should take advantage of the fact that we live close by, and that it was our last Sunday in Paris. Sunday afternoon we walked around - Place Vendrome, le Madeleine, l'Opera, Palais Royal, etc.

It's been really nice that we have been walking all over the place - but I definitley won't be sad to get home to my car! Morgan - like you said in your email, I'm ready to get home and workout with you! Too much white bread and too many pastries.
Kirby came in this morning. So tonight we'll be all around town I'm sure!

Catching up

We've had some nice evenings out this week. Wednesday we went out for drinks and ate Mexican food - good, but not the real deal. Last night we went out to the Latin Quarter and ate at an Italian restaurant. Our afternoons are busy with sightseeing, although we took the afternoon off today and deep cleaned our apartment and did laundry. Time is flying and there's still places to see and lots of sketching to do. We have a list that still needs check marks. We are planning on going to the Louvre again tonight (me and Monique's 3rd time). There's still expositions there that we haven't seen yet.
Our professor has kept school interesting - we feel that we've learned a lot. Almost everyday we play some sort of game. A few days ago we played a game like Taboo, we all had to write down a celebrity, an object, a place, and something else. Then we each had 30 secs to try to get our team to guess as many as possible. Yesterday we set up a murder case, we got with partners, had 5 minutes to write up an alibi with details from the night before. Then we spent a couple hours interrogating each other as to who had the weakest alibi. Today we had a list of 20 past tense sentences. We had to mark whether they were correct or not, if they were incorrect, we had to correct them. Then we bid (from 10 to 100) on how sure we were of our answer, if we were right, then we got double the score we bid, if we were wrong we had to subtract triple that amount. The next game, we had a chart with different subjects - a verb, a French town, French celebrity, anatomy, adjective, food item, etc., she picked a letter and we had 30 secs to fill it out.

Seeing Paris

Monday after school we went to Les Halles with Heather Morse. It was fun to do some more shopping.
Tuesday afternoon was nice and sunny. Monique and I covered a lot of ground. We walked to Sainte Chapelle, Saint Germain de Pres, St. Sulpics, The Sorbonne Church and the Jardin du Luxembourg. The gardens there were beautiful. It felt almost like a tropical resort there. We sat down by the water, there were palm trees and light granite paths, it was great. Looking forward to going back there for an afternoon. When we got home we got ready with Kate and Laura and headed to Trocadero. It's a park across the river from the Eiffel Tower where they are showing the soccer games. It took longer than we an anticipated - 1 and a half hours to walk there, so we got there by half time. By the time it was over it was dark, and the tower was lit up. We took our time walking home, we walked down the Champs Elysees and stopped at the Louve, it was lit up beautifully. There was a man in the entrance playing his trumbone, it was gorgeous to listen to as it echoed through the courtyard. We made it home a little after midnight - we definitly want to go out late again, what a beautiful city!

Versailles

We went to Versailles on Sunday, it was gorgeous. We spent probably an hour in the palace then a few hours walking through the gardens. There was beautiful music playing throughout the gardens, all the fountains were on, and people were boating around in the man-made "lake". It was amazing seeing how big everything was. The gardens went on for so long that we never went to the end of them. It felt like we were in our own world, there were plenty of quite times away from the other tourists.
That night we watched Marie Antoinette.

A Chilly Saturday

We got up early and bought a metro pass for the day. We took it out to the peripherique where there was supposed to be a flea market. It was a sleepy little town - without a flea market. But we wandered around, got breakfast, and got back on the metro. We took it to the opposite side of town, to La Defense (a.k.a. the Cube). It was really cold today, especially by La Defense, felt like low 40s. We walked around and looked at the interesting modern art peices and architecture around there, then headed to St. Germain-des-Pres. We found a cafe for lunch, and all got margarita pizzas that were really good (like Mister Pizza in Ste Foy). We found some boutiques that we went into.
When we were headed back to the metro we decided to have a race home. So Kate and Monique chose one line that connected to a different one, but then they would have to walk longer than Laura and I. L and I had 2 metro changes and it was a little less direct, but we got out closer to our apartement. Although Laura and I sprinted everywhere, we were pretty unlucky with all the timing of hitting the metros. So we came running in, and Kate and Monique had already been home for a few minutes. But it was fun though!
We decided to change rooms (since we're half way through), so we pulled everything out of our closets and drawers. Before we started putting things back though, the doorbell rang. It was our landlord who we hadn't met yet. She came to work on the internet. So the house was upside down, but she was nice about it... and got our Wifi working! She also helped me with the washing-machine (since it wouldn't drain) and was able to show me what I did wrong.
We are going to go to Sacre Coeur tonight after we watch the US vs England game.

Here Comes The Sun...

School was hard today, we had to listen to a radio broadcast and answer questions about it. It was really difficult to understand and a little discouraging. But I think everyone was in the same boat. After school Harmony, an Australian in our class, came over for a little while.
The weather was very nice this afternoon so Monique and I went for a walk. We walked through Ile St Louis (got gelato), sketched Notre Dame, walked to Sorbonne in the Latin Quarter and then to the Pantheon. It was a really pretty walk, but took longer than we thought it would, so we weren't able to go everywhere we were hoping to hit.
We just had dinner - a stir fry, and we're headed out to the Louvre. We are going to watch the World Cup tonight.

Thursday, June 10, 2010

Last night we met Mrs., Heather and Kyle Morse for dinner. They're in town for 10 days and asked if we could meet. We met them at their hotel and found a little restaurant for dinner. Kyle tried frog legs for the first time - reminded me of our visits to Lompnieu. I had a great French Onion Soup, which warmed me up from being out in the rain all afternoon. Yesterday afternoon in between class and our tour Monique and I walked home to meet Kate and Laura. Unfortunately we had forgotten our key, but I assumed they would be home - they weren't, so I wasn't able to change. But we hadn't needed the umbrella on the walk home, and without thinking, I left it at our apartment door. We made it back to the school just in time for the tour (and the rain to start to pick up). I felt really bad, but somebody gave Monique and I an umbrella to use. On the way home we took the metro, and were happy to make it home faster than usual. Anyways, we had a good dinner and sat and talked at the restaurant till 10:30. We then walked by Notre Dame, and all the lights in town were starting to come on. It was so gorgeous - our first time to see the city all lit up. Walking back over the Seine and looking down the river was beautiful! No wonder it's called the City of Lights. After we got home Monique and Kate went out for Gelato and ate it down by the river.
We are really excited for the World Cup. It's a really big deal over here - posters and advertisements all over the place. We listen to the world cup song - Wavin' Flag (great song!), a few times everyday and Laura is making a music video to the song. That means that everywhere we go, we're filming random places and things we see to add to the video. Tomorrow at the Hotel de Ville (City Hall) there is going to be the opening ceremony shown on a huge screen that they're setting up. So a group of people from school are planning on going together - this will definitely be in our music video.
Today is halfway through our time in Paris - really sad! We are planning on picking up the pace on things we do. Because we've seen a lot, but have some many more places we want to see. We think tomorrow we are going to watch of of FIFA, then go to the Louvre again (then probably watch more soccer). Saturday we're thinking Versailles if it doesn't rain.

Rain, rain go away...

Monique and I went out for coffee again with Charlotte and Garth and Chris. We were invited to go to lunch with them, but the coffee shop we've gone to with them is expensive enough, and had to excuse ourselves for lunch. Our school a "visite" of a cemetery that we went on this afternoon. Since it was raining so hard we took the metro. We saw Chopin's grave as well as Jim Morrison's and Haussmann's. It was a beautiful cemetery.
We are planning on going to the Pompidou Center tonight (here in Paris they call it Beaubourg). It's just one block away and we feel that we should get to know our neighborhood.

Beginning of week 2

I got behind a couple days, so this is to summarize it all. Sunday we went out early and walked along the Seine. We went to Musee d'Orsay (since it was free that particular day) and got in line about an hour before it opened. We were in a pretty good spot in line (it was quickly getting long)until it started pouring rain. The sky was a dark gray, the only other time I have seen rain that hard was when we were here in 2003. Since we were standing up against the wall, under an overhang, everyone in line took down the dividers and pushed us up against the wall. I was standing between two big guys and couldn't move an inch - for about 20 minutes.
Once the museum opened, we had completely lost our spot in line and were pushed further to the back of the line by eager tourists. I really enjoyed the art, we saw Renoir and Van Goghs, I think I liked the art more there than at the Louvre.

There was a sailing school that we stopped and watched for awhile.
We tried to go to the Grand Palais (for a third time), it was open, but it was expensive and the exposition that was there didn't seem worth it. So we headed home and watched the finals of the French Open.
Monday Monique and I went to school and went out with 4 people from our school for coffee. Charlotte and Garth are an older couple from South Africa who are very nice. Chris and Nicole are Australians. They're all nice and it's interesting finding the cultural differences between us.
For homework we had to be detectives and find someone and follow them for 10 minutes and write down everything that they did... I just hope nobody ever does that to me!
We then continued our card games, and watched a movie.
Tuesday after school we saw that Kate and Laura had gone shopping and got the urge. So we went to Naf Naf, Zara and H and M, and got some things. We're trying told off for another week and a half until the sales start. We went out for Falafels for dinner - they were great!

Sacre Coeur

We took advantage of our youth and got into the Louvre for free. The best part (and it wasn't the Mona Lisa) was the ancient Egyptian section, lots of hieroglyphics and really cool sarcophaguses. We had fun making fun of all the strange looking Egyptian sculptures and looking at all the jewelery. We look forward to exploring another section next Friday night. We stopped and each got a Kaabab for dinner on the way home.
Saturday morning we, unfortunately, missed a flea market that we were going to go to. But we went to the market, brought home some food and made a good breakfast. The weather was so warm, so we headed out for another adventure. It took us probably between 45 minutes and an hour to walk to Sacre Coeur.
It is a beautiful white church that is on top of a hill, there were great views of the city. We walked through the church then went down into the crypt. After that we found a pretty walkway to sit in while we sat had a picnic lunch that we had brought. We walked through Montmartre and then probably took almost half an hour to get to the Montmartre cemetery. It was gorgeous and worth going to.
We found our way home and caught the tail end of the semi-finals for the French open.
We made savory crepes for dinner and for dessert we split a couple pastries.

C'est le weekend!

Last night Monique and I went to the market and bought fresh mozzarella, cut it up and made a dish out of it with tomatoes. We haven't had many vegetables since we have been here, so I boiled some green beans, broccoli and peas. We had some wine with it, and for desert Sariah brought Mango ice cream that was really good. I agree with you Dad, we need some protein - so hopefully we will get some meat tonight. We've been eating a lot of oatmeal and finished it off this morning, so I think we'll pick up some more of that. Laura and Kate brought some healthy granola bars which are full of nuts, so that's also been nice to have. We have had some eggs a few mornings and made omelets a few nights ago.
Last night we went to the laundromat and did a load of laundry, it is just right outside the door of our apartment building. We then came home and played cards - we've kept a running score of the different card games we've been playing.
You would think that by now we could figure out how to get to and from school, but every time we get lost. It's kind of strange to me, because I feel completely lost everyday. We haven't taken the same way twice yet, we always start out going the right direction, but the streets aren't on a grid and although we start off in the right direction they turn and by the end we're totally in the wrong spot. We can't seem to remember the right way to go, and have to pull out our map after we get going down the wrong street, I'm sure by the end of the month we'll have figured it out. Today we forgot the map, but managed to get back on track and were just a couple minutes late for class. The other night I started getting worried after Kate and Laura should have been home from school for about 45 minutes, they were going to hurry home so we could go out. It ended up taking them almost an hour and a half to get home because they got so turned around. Sariah got lost last night when she came for dinner also, it took her about an hour. It's really difficult because the streets don't last long, they then turn into other streets or fork, or you come to a dead end. Plus there are quite a few streets with similar names - different versions. We haven't taken the metro yet (only the RER when we first got into town) we're getting to know the city by street names and this way we see a whole lot more of it.
Today in class we talked about restaurants, expositions, agricultural resources of different countries, different places to shop and things at a supermarche. She told us that the big sales throughout France start on June 19th (definitely excited about that!).
During class we walked down to the open air market and Cecile gave us 2 assignments that we needed to finish within 20 minutes. Our first one was to find 3 items that are rouge, verts, blancs, violets, jaunes et orange and write them down. For the second assignment we needed to see how many items we could barter for and get with just the 2 euros that she gave us. I went to a stand and told the guy that we were playing a game- nous jouons un jeu, un competition, and we needed many things for 2 euro. He didn't seem too happy about it all, but I ended up getting une fraise, une carise, une amande, un raison et un abricot for 20 cents! Monique spent the rest of the money on fruits de la mere- it really stank when we brought it back to class. But it was really fun. The guy she bought it from thought something was so funny and kept laughing the whole time and then went to tell his coworkers about it - maybe something came out wrong, I don't know.
On our way home from school I had heard that they sell the fruit for really cheap when they start shutting down, so we stopped by. Got a whole bunch of great things - 3 cantaloupe, a bag of apples, part of a watermelon, a carton of apricots, 2 cartons of strawberries and a pineapple for 2 euros - that was bargaining! She kept wanting to sell each thing for a euro, but then we would say no (cause we didn't want to walk for 25 minutes with it) then she'd throw in something else, then we would say 50 cents? and she'd agree and so on - 4 times! We told Kate and Laura we would buy some fruit for a snack before we went to the Louvre tonight, and we got a pretty good deal for it all!
Monique and I just got back from doing some sketches, we sketched our street and courtyard. It's a little intimidating when people walk by and stop to look - especially when they're talking and we don't understand what they're saying. Our place would be a good location for the another version of Rear Window - it's a great place to people-watch.

The sun came out!

I got another Pepito today - the really good cream and chocolate chip filled pastry, it was great. We are starting to become regulars at certain patisseries although we try to mix it up. There are two that are around the corner from our school we've started going to one for breakfast and grab a sandwich at the other for lunch. School was great again today. I asked Cecile today if French people ate as they walked, and she said only in Paris (which, obviously, doesn't happen all that often, since I haven't seen anyone) but in the rest of France the 2 hour lunch period that everyone - students included, are given is what keeps the French eating slow and enjoying their meals.
After school Monique and I stopped by a shop and I bought a pack of 3 moleskins. So our sketching adventures began. We went to the Pompidou Center (and while sharing a Mille Feille, we sketched that, then a tower that is also close to our house - tour Saint Jacque, then Notre Dame.
It is so nice and warm here, probably mid 70s. It's definitely a nice change from the clouds and rain, we hope it stays!
Last night for dinner we went to the Latin quarter because we found out that the rumors that the Louvre was free Wednesday was false, so we'll go Friday.

I got a picture of where we ate when we came to Paris with Carole, Jess and ALi, and saw the hotel. For dinner I got Onion Soup, le Plat du Jour (Spaghetti Bolognese) et Glace - it was a good meal for 10 euros.
Monique and I are cooking dinner tonight for the girls plus Sariah (the girl in our French class at U of I) and Sariah's friend.

Vendredi

Monique and I branched out this morning with oatmeal for breakfast. But we made it up with jambon sandwiches for lunch. School has been a lot of fun. Out teacher's name is Cecile, she is a little larger, and VERY animated. She makes us laugh so hard - and of course made me cry a few times from laughing so hard. There are 8 people in my class. A couple (in their late 50s) from South Africa, 2 girls and 1 guy from Australia and a girl from Chili. We are all just about the same level, so it makes it nice that we're all on the same page. Everyone has a good since of humor and we spent a lot of time laughing. Yesterday we had an exception to that, a policewoman from Kazakastan who didn't laugh at all, but she got moved to a different class, yay.
The one rule at school is absolutely no English (like Alliance Francais). There's actually a piggy bank that you have to put money in if you use English. In the middle of the morning we take a break and have tea and coffee. It's interesting getting to know people in French. The girl from Chili doesn't speak any English, so even if I wanted to, couldn't converse more than what we know how to say and however much we can understand in French.
During our class we talked about museums and things to do and see in Paris. Plus just asking practical questions that you don't learn in French class at the U of I.
Tonight we are going to go to the Louvre, we hear that it's free for students on Wednesday nights.

They're really into the world cup over here - lots of advertisements for it.

1 Jeune

It was sad to leave Kate and Laura this morning we were all a little sad that we have to spend from 9-5 apart, but nevertheless, Mo and I headed out. We made it to school, and found a great patasserie around the corner where Monique got a chocolate chip sweet bread, and I got a really good pastry that was long and had a thin cream layer in the middle with a chocolate chips - a new discovered favorite. One thing that I have noticed is that I have never seen anybody eating as they walk here. None of the patisseries have chairs though, so I wonder what they do, they must always take their goods home to eat.
Monique and I went shopping for the first time today. We just hit one store, but it's really fun. They don't tax food here, but there is a 19.60% tax on clothing! For students (at this particular store) there was a 10% discount, so it helped out that tax.
We are headed out the door to get dinner in the Latin Quarter.

First Day of School

We did our usual (which we have done every morning so far) which is stop by one of our local Boulongeries for a pastry. We found our school, it's about a 25 minute walk. It's tiny - like everything in France. All the rooms are small, so although they argue that they only will take 8 students per class to keep it personal, it's also because no more will be able to squeeze in. First day of school consisted of us all taking written and oral placement tests. We were told what the schedule for the next month is going to be and we met the teachers. There are 6 different sections. The two beginning classes - complete beginners and intermediate beginners are in the afternoon classes and the four others are in the morning.
We headed for round two of the Grand Palais, but with our luck - it was closed, because it was Monday. So we went across the river to Invalides. We saw Napoleon's grave and walked through the war museum. I really liked it, it was interesting to see a different country's perspective on WWII.

We dressed up and went to find dinner. By now we are getting really tired of sandwiches and bread - which is really sad, but we thought we'd take a break on pizza and pasta also. We found Chinese, and although it was a whole in the wall, it was absolutely delicious. The other night we went to a great pizza restaurant and ordered the Menu Formule. It came with a pizza, drink and dessert. I got a chevre pizza that was wonderful and orangina. For dessert I ordered something I didn't recognize. It ended up being a caramel custard.
Each night we've all sat on our bed together and watched a movie. So we usually start a show or movie and then finish it the next night. Tonight we watched some Wipeout episodes.
